Apple sends Siri developers to AI coding bootcamp

Apple is sending some of its Siri developers back to school. Fewer than 200 engineers will go through a multi-week bootcamp to learn how to use AI coding tools like Anthropic's Claude Code or OpenAI's Codex, according to The Information.

The reason: Apple's Siri team has been seen internally as sluggish for years and fell behind modern AI developments like ChatGPT. Apple plans to unveil a completely revamped Siri at its WWDC developer conference in June. The new version is expected to run on Google's Gemini model and be significantly more conversational.

After the bootcamp, around 60 people will stay on the core development team, with another 60 tasked with monitoring Siri's performance and safety. Apple had already restructured the Siri team in early 2025, placing it under software chief Craig Federighi. Former AI lead John Giannandrea is leaving Apple for good this week.
