Google's Gemini is losing ground in the AI market, according to three new data points. AI text recognition platform Pangram analyzed model market shares based on submitted texts. OpenAI has held over 50 percent every month since tracking began. Anthropic climbed from 4.3 to 14.9 percent, mainly in technical and scientific fields. Gemini dropped from 12 percent to just 1.9 percent in July 2026, what Pangram calls a "collapse," also reflected in OpenRouter data.

Similarweb data shows Google's website market share dipped last month from 27 to 26.8 percent, though it was just 9.4 percent a year ago. Google claims one billion monthly Gemini App users, though monthly active users is a very low-quality signal.

Every source has blind spots. Pangram mostly measures writing tasks where Gemini has always trailed Claude and ChatGPT. OpenRouter skews toward open-weight models. Similarweb ignores mobile apps. All three still tell the same story: people are using Gemini less. That could help explain the recent leadership shakeup at Google DeepMind, which saw several senior figures depart, including Demis Hassabis.
