OpenAI is cutting the price of GPT-5.6 by 20%. A few thoughts:

1) This is, of course, also a clear signal to its biggest competitor, Anthropic. Anthropic is currently dealing with difficult PR, negative feedback around Opus 5, and poor rate limits in the subscription plan for Fable 5. In that context, this is a smart move: increase the pressure while positioning OpenAI as the better alternative.

2) It also seems to show that OpenAI’s early and aggressive investment in its own compute infrastructure is paying off, as is its focus on more efficient models. Increasingly, OpenAI can compete not only on quality, but also on price. Those investments are starting to compound. And btw. they just announced an 8 GW buildout deal. So more compute incoming

3) At the same time, this has to be seen in the context of increasingly strong and, above all, cheap Chinese models, such as DeepSeek 4 Flash or the new “Ox Alpha,” which is rumored to be GLM-5.3 Flash and is expected to be very inexpensive as well.

We know from cost curves how quickly inference prices are falling year over year, and how much cheaper increasingly powerful models are becoming. So this is not just a strategic choice for OpenAI; it is also a form of pressure. State-of-the-art models are being pushed toward lower prices.
