With all these releases, we sometimes forget what is actually happening. We are, quite literally, missing the forest for the trees, and losing sight of the bigger picture. Here are a few thoughts.

By now, it has surely become commonplace to say that we are standing at the threshold of the most transformative societal change humanity has witnessed in centuries. It is no coincidence that the current moment is compared to the Industrial Revolution, and sometimes even to humanity’s discovery of fire. In other words, we are facing a societal transformation that could usher in an entirely new civilizational era. That is something worth pausing to fully comprehend.

Demis Hassabis, Nobel laureate and one of the most important scientists of our time, calls what lies ahead the golden age of science. We can already see glimpses of what he means. Diseases, including certain forms of cancer, are becoming increasingly curable, and cancer itself will, in all likelihood, eventually become fully curable. But it does not stop there: every disease could ultimately become curable, including the greatest disease of all, aging, which may also become treatable. Biblical, even mythical ideals such as eternal life, or at least an extraordinarily long life, are coming within reach. I know this sounds like a fantasy, but this is where we are heading. And it is a prospect repeatedly affirmed by many of the world’s most prominent thinkers, researchers, and CEOs. Autonomous AI researchers, which will increasingly take over research while becoming faster and more intelligent, are already being deployed internally in their earliest forms and will revolutionize science and drug discovery within just a few years.

Anyone currently working with AI will also have noticed that agents are the defining topic of the moment. AI is no longer merely a chatbot. It increasingly completes tasks independently. If we follow these developments to their logical conclusion, they will also transform the world of work. I have many friends who are now experiencing their “aha moment” because, for the first time, ChatGPT Work is doing things for them instead of merely answering their questions. Through connectors, it searches and answers their emails, creates appointments, links entire sequences of tasks together, and executes them. You do not need to be a genius to understand that these processes will turn the entire white-collar sector upside down. Sooner rather than later. At the beginning, I said that we are missing the forest for the trees. This is what I meant. The transformation brought about by this technology is all-encompassing. Every area of life will be changed and transformed. We often forget that.

Take schools and education, for example. I have a son who is just over a year old. I am absolutely certain that by the time he starts school, he will no longer experience the kind of education I did: traditional classroom teaching, with one teacher standing in front of 25 students. Within one or two years, every child will have an individual AI tutor tailored to all of their needs, always available and ready to help. Universities are another field. I completed my degrees in Germany, finishing my master’s in 2019, before AI assistance existed in its current form. I can barely imagine what studying at universities will look like a few years from now. Consider a PhD program, for example. With agentic AI, it is fundamentally possible for anyone to contribute to the creation of new knowledge for scientific research.

What I am trying to say is that everything will change, and it will happen within a very short period of time. The tipping point is now. And this is something we are hearing from all sides. But there are also worrying developments that I do not want to conceal, and for which I have no answer. I live in Europe. I do not want to bore you with the fact that energy policy here has been handled catastrophically. In short, Europe plays virtually no role in AI as a whole. It has no frontier labs, no money to build the necessary data centers, and no energy to operate them. Europe is being crushed between the United States and China. China is massively expanding its solar and nuclear capacity, training excellent domestic models, and building a national semiconductor industry. On the other side are the United States, which, as we all know, currently holds the global lead in AI. It is this imbalance that worries me. Of course, there are scenarios like the one Elon Musk describes, in which AI and robotics make practically everything free within a few years and money no longer matters. But that outcome is not guaranteed. My concern is that this technological revolution will also create losers and dependencies. In the same way, there will soon be clear losers in the economy among those who were unwilling to learn how to use AI and are therefore replaced. Those who refuse to engage with AI will be replaced. That is as certain as anything can be, because growth and profit are what count in business. Anyone who is unwilling to use AI for those purposes, or unable to keep pace, will simply be replaced.

And, of course, this also means that breakthroughs in medicine, longevity, and other fields will primarily be commercialized. The question of how these advances will be distributed and who will have access to them will not resolve itself. I am not a doomer. God knows I am not. Quite the opposite. I say: keep moving forward. Use AI to revolutionize science and cure diseases. But I also say that we need a discussion about how access to these advances can be ensured. We need to discuss what all of this means for the entire world and how we can make sure that everyone benefits. I am an optimist, and I believe that this will happen. I believe we will enter a golden age and that humanity as a whole will reach an unprecedented level of abundance and well-being. But I also believe that, despite all of this, we need to discuss the path that takes us there.

It is no coincidence that OpenAI and Sam Altman have warned about the dangers of cyberwarfare. The race for AI, AGI, and ASI is a competition between rivals, currently between China and the United States. And AI will be used as a weapon. That is deeply concerning because the technology is advancing so quickly that our defenses are struggling to keep up.

That is what I wanted to say. We are so caught up in thinking from one release to the next, constantly waiting for the newest model and the latest update, that I believe we often lose sight of what is happening as a whole. We lose sight of the fact that the tipping point is happening right now, and of what that means for all of us. Perhaps this can help start a discussion.
