wtf another huge breakthrough: Prof Anima Anandkumar and colleagues used a physics-informed neural network to find a promising candidate for a singularity in the 3D Euler equations, without external forcing or boundaries.
Their neural network found a candidate in the 3D Euler equations, which describe an ideal fluid without viscosity. It needs no external force or surrounding walls to drive the process.
That makes it particularly interesting: the flow itself could generate increasingly extreme behavior until the smooth mathematical description breaks down.
A successful proof would resolve a major open question about ideal fluids. The Navier–Stokes Millennium Problem, which adds viscosity, would remain a separate challenge.
